Of course we had to go with the red and green mini M&Ms for our Christmas edition of butter cookies! It’s the best time of year when the seasonal M&Ms come out, they always hit the shelves early and are a great reminder that holiday baking is right around the corner.
I definitely stand on the side of mini M&Ms tasting better. Maybe it’s the ratio of candy shell to chocolate? I remember I always used to ask for the little blue tubes at the grocery store register as a kid.
I always make some kind of festive M&M cookie for all the foodie holidays and these butter cookies are so simple and so delicious. Put aside the 47 ingredients and make these as part of your cookie trays this year!

- 1 cup granulated white sugar (200g)
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- 2½ cups all purpose flour (315g)
- ½ teaspoon baking powder
- ¼ teaspoon kosher salt
- Mini M&Ms (about 1 cup for topping)
Instructions
- Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a large bowl, beat 1 cup softened butter and 1 cup granulated white sugar until light and fluffy.
- Add 1 egg and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract and beat until smooth.
- In a separate bowl, combine 2½ cups all-purpose flour, ½ teaspoon baking powder, and ¼ teaspoon kosher salt.
- Gradually fold the dry ingredients into the butter mixture until the dough forms.
- Scoop 1 tablespoon portions and roll into balls, then gently flatten each between your palms to create a flat surface.
- Press the top of each dough ball into Mini M&Ms, adding a few extra if desired, and place cookies 2 inches apart on the prepared baking sheet.
