Hot Honey Carrots

Perfect to add a twist to a classic side dish.

Glazed carrots are one of my favorite side dishes from childhood, but these hot honey carrots take an old classic & turn them into something brand new – with only one extra ingredient! Great to add alongside a comfort meal or perfect for a holiday side dish!

Hot Honey Carrots Ingredients

These are very similar to traditional glazed baby carrots. But the star of the show is the addition of cayenne pepper! These are not overly spicy by any means, they have a small kick as you continue to eat them.

I love the change in flavor profile and while they are still sweet, they seem a bit more sophisticated?

Into the specifics…

  • baby carrots
  • honey (I use plain honey – you could use a store bought hot honey for more kick!)
  • light brown sugar
  • unsalted butter
  • kosher salt
  • cayenne pepper
A white bowl filled with baby carrots, a clear bowl with a tablespoon of butter, a clear bowl with a tablespoon of brown sugar with salt and cayenne pepper, and a 1/4 cup measuring cup filled with honey.

Steaming Carrots

I steam all of my vegetables in a steamer basket insert. They are inexpensive and so versatile! I see them in my grocery store kitchen tool aisle all the time.

You simply add a few inches of water to a pot, place in the steamer basket, add your carrots & bring to a boil. Put the lid on and steam for about 5-8 minutes depending on the size of your carrots. I always do the knife test to check it glides in the carrot with little force to ensure they are done.

Best of all, it’s a one pot ordeal – once the carrots are cooked, remove the steamer basket and use the same pot to make the hot honey glaze!

How to Make Hot Honey Carrots Ahead of Time

I love carrots for a holiday side dish! I tend to make them for both Thanksgiving and Easter. If you’re used to cooking a large variety of food for a holiday party, I’m sure you’ve got your schedule and timing down pat.

Last Thanksgiving, I made these ahead of time and reheated in the microwave…yeah, I know sounds a bit crazy but it worked! I placed them in a microwave safe serving dish and heated until fully warmed through!

Add a little kick to the traditional side dish!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 12 ounces baby carrots
  • ¼ cup honey
  • 2 tablespoons light brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • ½ teaspoon kosher salt
  • ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper

Instructions

  1. Add 2 inches of water to a pot and place your steamer basket inside.

  2. Add the carrots to the basket, then bring the water to a boil.

  3. Once boiling, cover the pot with a lid and steam the carrots until they are fork-tender.

  4. Carefully remove the steamer basket and pour out the water from the pot.

  5. Return the empty pot to the stove over low to medium heat. Add 2 tablespoons of butter and let it melt.

  6. Stir in ¼ cup honey, 2 tablespoons light brown sugar, ½ teaspoon kosher salt, and ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper until combined.

  7. Add the steamed carrots back to the pot and stir to coat them evenly in the sauce.

  8. Let the sauce simmer and thicken, stirring frequently to ensure the carrots stay evenly coated.

  9. Once the sauce has thickened and the carrots are fully coated, remove from heat and serve!

Notes
